Lloyd's Register has invested in Guardian Marine Testing Ltd (GMT) in a major step forward for the Wilton Centre company.
The alliance is designed to support the growing and substantial global fuel services of FOBAS, Lloyd’s Register’s fuel consultancy service, and of GMT, which is a fuel testing specialist.
FOBAS is one of the world’s leading providers of fuel oil bunker analysis and advisory services, providing high levels of service to marine clients. Services offered include fuel testing supported by highly experienced engineers.
Under the new agreement, Lloyd’s Register has taken a non-controlling stake in GMT, which positions FOBAS well for the continued success and development of its services to the industry.
GMT is a privately owned company with its head office and fully automated laboratory at The Wilton Centre.
Its main business is to provide a fully integrated service for bunker fuel testing as well as bunker quantity inspection-related services.
Under the agreement, GMT will provide FOBAS clients with access to enhanced laboratory testing services.
Clients of GMT will also benefit from a wider database for fuel statistics and quality advice and an increase in the availability of testing services on a global basis.
Douglas Raitt, Global manager, FOBAS, said: “Fuel represents one of the most significant operational costs for ship operators and the impact of poor quality or contaminated fuel could put the safety and environmental performance of fleet operations at risk. Fuel analysis is vital.
“Operators need confidence in the quality of their fuel, as well as the performance of fuel systems and engines. Through our investment in GMT we will further improve our ability to serve the shipping industry.
“We understand the industry and we understand fuel. So does GMT, so this is a really good fit for both companies.“
GMT’s Managing Director, Andrew Shaw, said: “FOBAS is a world leader in bunker services. The investment by FOBAS and the agreement to work together demonstrates a high level of commitment to the service needs of ship operators.“
