More than 120 people attended an event at The Wilton Centre to discuss the future of biotechnology.

Next Steps in Industrial Biotechnology was held in the unit which will house the £12m expansion of the National Industrial Biotechnology Facility (NIBF).

CPI assembled speakers including industry leaders, academics and the then government minister Ian Lucas and they spoke about the profit opportunities offered by bio-tech.

The Government is investing £12 million in the NIBF, which will create open access demonstrator facilities.

Then Under Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Science Mr Lucas closed the event, emphasising that the National Industrial Biotechnology Facilities at Wilton represent the future of innovation in the North East.

Mr Lucas said: “Biotech is an exciting and innovative sector”.
